All About Dermal Fillers

Searching for the fountain of youth? You might find it in a syringe full of dermal filler. Just a few quick and virtually painless injections can smooth fine lines and wrinkles, add volume, and subtly contour your face to deliver a more youthful, structured, and supple appearance overall.

While several types of dermal fillers are available, Radiesse, the filler we use at Medical Tattoo & Cosmetic Centers of America, is one of the most popular. This soft-tissue filler not only works to correct signs of aging (in both the face and hands) but can also be used for facial augmentation.

How exactly does this dermal filler work, and what can you expect? Read on to find out.

What Is Radiesse?

Radiesse is a dermal filler formulated to correct volume loss in the face and the back of the hands and add structure to certain areas of the face.

This unique dermal filler works by immediately adding volume while stimulating collagen and elastin production via its active ingredient, calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA).

How Does Radiesse Dermal Filler Work?

Unlike other dermal fillers, Radiesse products feature CaHA (their active ingredient) in a gel matrix that essentially mimics the natural scaffolding of the skin’s connective tissues.

After injection, the filler immediately adds volume to the treatment areas, so results can be seen almost immediately. As the gel matrix gradually breaks down over time, CaHA encourages the skin to produce more critical proteins that give skin its youthful, voluminous structure.

Ultimately, the newly formed collagen and elastin provide the skin with renewed structure — even after the gel carrier matrix has broken down.

If fillers aren’t quite your style, but you still want to stimulate structural protein production in your skin, other highly effective, collagen-stimulating skincare treatments include:

What Can Radiesse Dermal Filler Treat?

Radiesse products can be used to treat signs of aging in the back of the hands and several facial areas that experience volume loss, lines, and wrinkles.

They include:

  • Smile lines. Also referred to as nasolabial folds, these vertical lines extend from the nostril area toward the corners of the upper lip.

  • Corners of the mouth. Also called oral commissure lines, these lines extend diagonally from the corners of the mouth toward the outside of the face. They often give the mouth a downturned appearance that may look sad or angry.

  • Marionette lines. These lines sweep around and under the outer corners of the lips. They can give a scowl-like appearance, even when someone isn’t upset.

  • Pre-jowl folds. When the areas on either side of the chin begin to experience volume loss, the skin may start to sag, creating the appearance of folds that look like the beginnings of jowls.

  • Chin wrinkles. These lines can make anyone look older than they are and may also detract from a nice smile.

According to surveys, 93% of patients who’ve had treatment with Radiesse dermal fillers would recommend the injectable to others and will continue to receive periodic treatments.

How Quickly Does Radiesse Produce Results?

After receiving Radiesse injections, you should notice an immediate improvement in lines, wrinkles, and volume.

Those results should continue to improve over the following days, and you should expect to see the most noticeable results about a week to 10 days after treatment.

How Long Do Radiesse Results Last?

Compared to most other dermal fillers available in the U.S., Radiesse products are one of the longest-lasting.

Typically, results from the injections last at least a year, sometimes longer. For more information on this highly effective and long-lasting dermal filler, visit Radiesse.com.

Who Should Get Derma Fillers?

Derma fillers can be beneficial for most people who struggle with mild, moderate, or severe lines or wrinkles. During your 20s, your body slows down its production of the structural proteins that help provide your skin with elasticity and a youthful appearance. That means wrinkles and fine lines are able to appear. Acne can also cause scarring that can be reduced through derma fillers.

If you are considering a derma filler procedure, always consult with a qualified medical provider during a pre-treatment consultation. You should express your skin concerns and relay any medical history that might be relevant.

During this time, your providers will determine if you’re a good candidate for derma fillers and create a treatment plan based on your needs.

What Else Can Dermal Fillers Treat?

Derma fillers can treat other problems in addition to fine lines and wrinkles. If you have sagging jowls, derma filler injections can be used to lift the skin around the mouth, cheeks, and jawline.

Derma fillers can also help with under-eye bags and dark circles. However, with this particular area, you don’t want to have too many injections, as it can make the under-eye area look more puffy.

Derma fillers can also help enhance cheek volume, reduce chin wrinkles, plump your lips, and treat facial folds.
