How Does a VI Peel Work to Treat Acne?
If you deal with stubborn acne, you’ve likely tried a number of off-the-shelf products to eliminate and prevent those annoying blemishes. And while over-the-counter products can work, if you’re like many acne sufferers, you may have found they’re only marginally effective. That’s often because these types of products are formulated as a one-size-fits-all treatment approach, when in reality, treating acne is a highly individualized process.
Furthermore, while over-the-counter products do contain active, acne-busting ingredients like salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and retinol, their concentrations are quite low. And for many people with persistent blemishes, more potent ingredients in stronger concentrations are necessary.
That’s where chemical peels shine — specifically, VI Peels. These peels are one of the newest, gentlest, and most effective chemical peels on the market, and for many people, they’re an excellent solution for treating acne.
What exactly do they do and what can you expect? Keep scrolling to learn all about how VI peels work to treat acne.
What Is a VI Peel?
The VI Peel is a gentle, medium-depth chemical peel that penetrates the top layer of your skin (the epidermis) to reach the dermis beneath. This peel, like all other chemical peels, works by exfoliating your skin and stimulating the production of new collagen.
If you’ve never had a chemical peel before, the VI Peel is a great choice for beginners, and it’s also suitable for use on a wide variety of skin conditions and skin types.
How Does a VI Peel Treat Acne?
A VI Peel works to treat acne and a variety of other skin conditions via its synergistic blend of active ingredients. Depending on the type of VI Peel (there are several), the formulation may include:
● Salicylic acid
● Retinoic acid
● Trichloroacetic acid
● Benzoyl peroxide
● Kojic acid
● Phenol
● Vitamin C
● Hydroquinone
● Hydrocortisone
● A blend of skin-nourishing minerals
When applied to the face, these ingredients work in concert to exfoliate and nourish your skin. They also help kill bacteria, reduce inflammation, clear clogged pores, and reduce oil production.
As the peel breaks down the outer layer of your skin, that dead, damaged layer will begin to slough off, revealing the healthier, fresher skin beneath. Expect your face to peel for approximately four to five days, after which you should notice improvements in skin tone, texture, and clarity. Aside from treating acne itself, the VI Peel is also effective for treating acne scars.
What to Expect During a VI Peel
VI Peels typically require about 30 minutes to apply and usually produce little to no pain. While treatment can vary slightly based on the product chosen and individual needs, here’s what you can generally expect when you get a VI Peel:
1. Your practitioner will thoroughly cleanse your face to remove oils, dirt, etc.
2. When your skin is totally clean, your practitioner will apply the VI Peel in two layers.
3. During application of the first layer, you may experience some tingling or numbness.
4. Following application of the second layer, your skin will turn white (that’s the peel “frosting”).
5. Your practitioner will advise you to let the peel sit on your skin for four to six hours before washing it off.
6. Approximately three days after the treatment, your skin will start to peel and will continue to slough off for a few more days.
How Often Should You Get VI Peels for Acne?
You can get a VI Peel every four to six weeks, but the appropriate frequency for your unique needs and skin type will be determined by your practitioner.
