When Is the Best Time to Get Botox?
If you’ve been contemplating Botox injections, the first thing you should know is that there’s no “wrong” time to start getting them (provided you’re in your 20s or older).
Even if you’re dealing with fine lines and wrinkles already, Botox can help soften their appearance within days and even diminish their depth over time. But there may be an “optimal” time to get Botox injections, especially if you’re looking to stave off lines and wrinkles and keep your complexion looking youthful and supple as you age.
When is that time, exactly?
Read on to learn what you should know about the “best” time to get Botox and what this incredibly popular cosmetic treatment can do for your skin.
Starting Botox in Your 20s & 30s
If you haven’t reached middle age yet and want to keep facial lines at bay, getting Botox in your 20s or 30s can help prevent wrinkles from developing.
Because the injections effectively stop facial muscle contractions throughout the treatment area, they prevent your skin from wrinkling up as much when you make various expressions. When your skin no longer naturally wrinkles when you smile, frown, raise your eyebrows, etc., it’s far less likely to form creases in those areas over time.
If you want to keep your skin looking as youthful as possible as you age, your mid to late 20s or 30s is likely the ideal time to start getting Botox injections. Keep in mind you’ll need to continue getting injections regularly to maintain your results.
If you want to avoid developing resistance to the active ingredient in Botox over time (it does happen but is rare), you may want to consider opting for Xeomin instead.
This injectable has the same active ingredient as Botox and functions in the same way but its more purified form may reduce your risk of long-term resistance as you undergo repeat treatments.
Starting Botox in Your 40s
If you’re lucky enough to have excellent skin genetics and don’t have many lines or wrinkles when you enter middle age, Botox may still be a more preventative rather than reactionary treatment.
But again, there’s no “wrong” time to start getting injections if you want them.
Just know that if you do have lines already, Botox injections will soften their appearance and can also help prevent additional wrinkles from forming.
You’ll also need to get repeat treatments at regular intervals to maintain your results.
Starting Botox in Your 50s & Beyond
When your wrinkles become more deeply etched in your skin, there’s only so much Botox can do for you, so if you start getting injections past middle age, don’t think of it as a cure-all for your lines.
Rather, Botox injections at this point in your life will help soften muscle movement and prevent existing lines from getting deeper, but you’ll likely still have lines even after your injections set in.
If you want to eliminate your wrinkles as much as possible, you’ll need to combine your Botox injections with a secondary treatment like fractional plasma skin resurfacing, chemical peels, or a non-surgical facelift (aka radiofrequency microneedling).
