How Do Botox and Xeomin Injections Work?

Both Botox and Xeomin contain a neurotoxin called botulinum type A. When injected subcutaneously, this neurotoxin inhibits the release of acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter that causes facial muscles to contract. Both products have the same mechanism of action; however, they differ slightly in composition and what they’re designed to treat.

While both products contain the same neurotoxin, Botox contains added protective proteins around the active molecules. Xeomin does not contain any additives whatsoever; it’s pure botulinum toxin type A. For that reason, it’s often referred to as Naked Botox.

What Areas Do Botox and Xeomin Target?

Cosmetic Botox injections are designed to improve the appearance of several types of moderate to severe facial lines and wrinkles. Because the active ingredient in Botox limits facial muscle contraction, injections can also help prevent the formation of new lines and wrinkles.

Botox injections can help prevent or improve the appearance of:

• Forehead wrinkles
• Crow’s feet around the eyes
• Frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines)
• Marionette lines around the corners of the mouth
• Bunny lines around the nose
• Upper and lower lip lines

Xeomin, on the other hand, is specifically formulated to address moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows. While Xeomin injections are FDA-approved for glabellar lines, they’re also effective for preventing or minimizing many of the same lines and wrinkles as Botox.

What to Expect With Botox or Xeomin Injections

When you visit Medical Tattoo Centers of America for either Botox injections or Xeomin injections, we strive to provide an unmatched experience. Because we value your privacy and comfort, you’ll be the only patient in the clinic at the time of your appointment. Here’s how our process works and what you can expect:

Consultation

During treatment consultation, you’ll meet with a licensed provider to discuss your problem areas and the improvements you’d like to make. Your provider will also discuss your health history to make sure you’re a good candidate for treatment.

Treatment Appointment

At your procedure appointment, your provider will apply a numbing agent to the treatment areas. When you’re numb, it’s time for the injections. The treatment requires about 10 minutes to complete and should produce minimal discomfort.

Aftercare

You can return to your normal routine immediately after your appointment. However, it’s best to avoid heavy physical activity, applying makeup, or touching your face for at least 24 hours. You should also avoid laying down for at least four hours after treatment to minimize the risk of product migration. Always follow your provider’s aftercare instructions carefully!

Results

When properly administered by a licensed medical professional, neither Botox nor Xeomin will produce a “frozen,” expressionless result. You’ll likely notice emerging results within 24 to 48 hours and full results within two weeks. Results from both treatments last approximately three to four months.
